Classics teacher launches 'You are Odysseus'

Laura Jenkinson-Brown publishes an interactive Odyssey book...

On 25th September, Churcher’s Classics teacher Laura Jenkinson-Brown’s new book ‘You are Odysseus’ was launched - turning one of the greatest stories ever told into an epic ‘choose-your-own’ adventure!

Based on Homer’s Odyssey and the retelling of the heroic king of Ithaca’s journey home after the Trojan War where he is confronted by natural and supernatural threats; shipwrecks, battles, monsters and the sea-god Poseidon. Laura’s readers are encouraged to become Odysseus, the many-minded man who is arguably the most famous adventure hero of all time, to make the same choices as he does in the original epic, or to adapt the story as they read. Laura explains ‘It’s a retelling of the Odyssey: you get to choose what happens to the titular hero and change his story entirely.’

Her book blends 'rigorous scholarship with an innovative, game-style format'. A year's labour of love, featuring over 700 sections, with 51 possible endings and 250,000 words, the book invites readers to step into the sandals of Odysseus and decide his fate. Laura says she hopes the book will appeal to teens, young adults and adult readers alike: ‘The Odyssey isn’t just a story to be studied – it’s a living, twisting adventure. I wanted people to feel they’re part of it’.
