Churcher’s College was delighted to welcome leading conservationist and author Isabella Tree for this year’s Grill Lecture, held on Wednesday 6 May at the Senior School.

The event drew a large audience of pupils, parents and members of the wider community, all keen to hear from one of the UK’s most influential voices in rewilding and environmental restoration.

Best known for her bestselling book Wilding: The Return of Nature to a British Farm, Isabella Tree spoke passionately about the power of rewilding and the importance of working with nature rather than against it. Drawing on her experiences at the pioneering Knepp Estate project in West Sussex, she shared how allowing land to return to a more natural state can lead to remarkable increases in biodiversity.

Her talk explored both the challenges and opportunities of rewilding in modern Britain, highlighting how even small changes in mindset and land management can have a significant environmental impact. She encouraged the audience to rethink traditional approaches to conservation and consider more dynamic, nature-led solutions. Students were particularly engaged by the discussion, with many reflecting on how the themes of sustainability and environmental responsibility connect with their own studies and future ambitions.

The evening formed part of Churcher’s College’s long-standing Grill Lecture series, which brings distinguished speakers to the school to broaden horizons and inspire intellectual curiosity beyond the classroom.

Background on the Churcher’s College Grill Lecture

The Churcher’s College Academic Lecture Series (CCALS) is one element of a rich supra-curricular programme for students designed to inspire curiosity and deepen understanding. Each year, we welcome a wide range of visiting speakers, from artists and scientists to entrepreneurs, philosophers, and campaigners, who challenge students to think critically, explore new ideas and engage with the wider world.

A highlight of the series is the annual Grill Lecture, established by former Head of Religion and Philosophy Judy Grill and named in her honour. This lecture focuses on topics with a philosophical perspective and remains a special tradition, with Judy attending each year.  Past speakers have included Kate Mosse, Chris Packham, Vince Cable, Simon Weston, and Floella Benjamin.
