On Saturday 21 March we were delighted to welcome back over 30 Old Churcherians to take part in the annual OC Hockey and OC Netball matches. With the introduction of the new kit and the weather firmly on our side, it was a super morning of sport, reconnection and friendly rivalry.
The morning started with the women’s hockey and it was clear from the first whistle that the OC team were in a competitive mood, looking to claim their first win against the school side since 2019. Despite a strong defensive line up, the current pupils went 0-2 up early on in the first half. Not to be deterred, the OCs battled strongly and found their rhythm to draw level and then go ahead. The score was levelled shortly after and with another goal apiece, the game finished a very respectable and hard-earned draw: 4-4.
Next up was the men’s hockey match, which was equally as competitive with neither side able to pull ahead by more than a single goal. With end-to-end action, strong tackles and great passing play, the match was great to watch and a fantastic conclusion to the school teams’ competitive season, with many playing their last match in school colours. With only a few minutes to go, the school team managed to score, taking the final score to 2-3.
The morning concluded with a lively netball match, with many of the OC women bring their hockey skills to the netball court. Up against a very strong school side, the OCs were under pressure from the start, with current pupils displaying quick passes and relentless pace. However, the OC team was not prepared to go down without a fight, and cheered on by the enthusiastic crowd, demonstrated some excellent shooting and great connection on the court, keeping the score line close to finish 19-23.
We are hugely grateful to our OCs for coming back to play in the matches – you bring a great energy and a lot of fun, and we love to have the opportunity to catch up with you. Thank you!
