OC news |
OC Derek French (58) has been campaigning tirelessly since the late 1990s for banking hubs when banks accelerated closing their high street branches. Derek, a former executive with NatWest, has long held a vision for community-style branches (multi-banks within one retail space). After 26 years of campaigning his vision has finally become a reality! Banks and government at long last listened to what Derek has been campaigning for and an organisation called ‘Cash Access UK’ has been set up to oversee the one-stop bank revolution. 150 banking hubs are up and running with 80 more in the pipeline. More will be needed as branch closures are now the norm throughout the country. In response, Labour has made a commitment to opening 350 hubs by 2029.
Earlier this year, on 20 January at a Parliamentary Reception Cash Access and Link Scheme Ltd welcomed Emma Reynolds, Economic Secretary to the Treasury, to a reception filled with people who have secured access to cash across the country. Derek French had a special mention from the Minister, for his hard work over the years and his commitment to bringing hubs to our high streets.
Derek has also joined the ranks of 'OC authors' having written a book at the start of his Campaign in 2000. We now have receipt of a copy of Derek's publication which will join the dedicated bookshelves at Churcher's library in the near future - watch this space!
Our congratulations go to Derek on seeing the fulfilment of 26 years of campaigning!
