Archie Moffat (19) recently won the British Equine Veterinary Association’s new BEVA 'One to Watch' award at BEVA Congress on 12 September 2025. This new award was introduced to celebrate early-career equine veterinary professionals for their clinical skills and passion about equine welfare and for their leadership in the field. Archie, who is a vet at Stable Close Equine Practice in Winchester, was one of four candidates shortlisted from all the nominations. “Our One to Watch winner Archie shines as a truly inspiring clinician,” said Kate Blakeman, who was on the judging panel. “Combining clinical skill with boundless enthusiasm and outstanding communication, Archie seems to build trust effortlessly, translating complex research into practical guidance for clients and colleagues alike.
Nominations were received from clients, colleagues, mentors, vet practices and organisations around the UK. They were reviewed by a panel of experts comprising a BEVA Careers Committee representative, a senior equine vet, a non-equine veterinary professional and an external industry representative. Archie, who was presented the award by HRH Princess Anne, Patron of The British Equine Veterinary Association, said “I am thrilled to receive the inaugural One to Watch award and to be recognised alongside the other excellent finalists. I have been very fortunate with the mentorship and support I have received early on in my career that has helped me get to this stage and look forward to giving back in the future.”
We recently caught up with Archie who told us his love of animals resulted from growing up on a farm surrounded by horses, dogs, chickens and sheep. "I knew I wanted to enter the profession from about the age of 10. At Churcher's I was brilliantly supported and found I really enjoyed science subjects." Archie went onto study Veterinary Medicine at the University of Nottingham where he graduated top of his year, and won the Barry Edwards memorial prize for highest overall grade in the equine final exams. He then began his career at a referral equine practice in Lympstone, Devon, as an intern where he supported a team of specialist clinicians in the day to day running of the hospital. Shortly after this, Archie moved to Wagga in regional NSW, Australia to work as an equine anaesthetist at Charles Sturt University, where he also lectured undergraduate vet students in veterinary anaesthesia and emergency care. After six months Archie moved back to the UK to work as a first opinion equine ambulatory vet where he has a varied clientele, ranging from pony club ponies to national hunt racehorses and international dressage horses. He says "I love the varied days, building relationships with clients and the constant variability and problem solving in the role. We also take undergraduate vet students for placement and I enjoy the teaching side of the role too. I have also just received some funding to carry out a research project."
Our congratulations go to Archie, on all his fantastic achievements and we wish him all the very best in his career - he really is 'One to Watch'!
