OCs celebrate the NatWest Vase win at Twickenham - 10 years on!

OC news

On Saturday 22 March, a reunion of the 1st XV of 2015 took place at the Turk's Head pub in Twickenham to celebrate Churcher's 2015 NatWest Vase win at Twickenham Stadium, 10 years on. Organised by OC Seb Herold alongside the Development Office, it was fantastic to see so many of the group back together, full of positive energy as they reminisced about their Churcher’s days.

The group were joined by the teachers and coaches who led them to victory that year, Dan Cox, Ben Seal and Tim Herman, who were equally pleased to have the opportunity to catch up with the group and hear what they have been up to since leaving Churcher's.

Thank you to everyone who came and made it such a fun evening!

Remembering the win...

On 25 March 2015, with the blessing of Headmaster Simon Williams, 19 coaches set off from Churcher’s College with 1,000 students and staff as the whole school, both Junior and Senior made the trip to Twickenham to watch the final Churcher’s U18 vs SEEVIC (South-East Essex VI Form College) at Twickenham Stadium. Added to their number, an extraordinary amount of parents turned up alongside relatives and Old Churcherians who were keen to share the excitement.

Winning 13-5 was not an easy task. SEEVIC’s team were physically bigger – only their No 7 was under 100kgs, but Churcher’s had had plenty of practice playing against larger opposition. Two fifth year students played up, Zac Housden and Matt Vawdrey and the rest of the team had played together for years, including a tour in Canada. On the day, Churcher’s won the psychological battle and a match report described Churcher’s as having ‘an irrepressible wall of defence’. You can read more about the occassion in the ‘Churcher's Rugby, 1924-2024’ book (page 50-53) at the link here.
