'Dennis Briggs, one of the most influential brewing scientists of recent history has died in Birmingham at the age of 89. Briggs was a Fellow and Life Member of the institute of Brewing and Distilling.

Dennis Briggs was born in Chichester in May 1933. He was educated at Churcher's College, Petersfield and won a Stage Scholarship to Clare College, Cambridge where he read Natural Sciences obtaining an honours degree in 1956. Before Cambridge Dennis did National Service in the RAF and was commission as a Pilot Officer. In 1959 he was awarded a PhD by the University of London following biochemical research at the Chester Beatty Institute...

Dennis was an outstanding research scientist, meticulous in approach with an obsession for experimental evidence. The results of his work were therefore all the more meaningful for the malting and brewing industry. He was a first-class teacher and I was fortunate to know him and to gain from his input to my research work in the 1970s. Dennis will be remembered fondly as a modest man with a quiet sense of humour. Those who knew him will be enriched by his memory and sustained by his contribution to the scientific basis of our industry.'
