Interviews - Medicine & Veterinary Medicine

Interviews

Always Check Your University's Website

Always check the website of the university you are applying to. They will give detailed information about the specifics of their selection and interview process, often with details of what they are looking for at interview, and sometimes suggestions of documents you should be familiar with for your interview.

Also look at the Medical Schools Council's main interview page.

Medicine Interview Guides

Oxbridge Medics - Topics to Review

Science Topics to Review Before Your Interview

  • Proteins - transcription, translation, and roles within the cell/body
  • Enzymes - kinetics and competitive/non-competitive inhibition
  • The immune system - T-cells, B-cells, antibodies, etc.
  • Gas exchange in humans
  • DNA, genes and chromosomes - mutations, mitosis/meiosis, and genetic conditions for ethics questions
  • Control of heart rate
  • Receptors
  • Nervous coordination - synapses and structures of neurons
  • Contraction of skeletal muscle
  • Control of blood glucose - insulin/glucagon and relation to diabetes
  • Homeostasis
  • Simple genetic inheritance - family trees

There is a lot there, but many of these come up fairly often, and they are spread fairly evenly. Interviewers will link between topics and apply concepts to medical scenarios to see how you cope with the unknown.

Interview Techniques

MMI - Things to Think About

  • Stating your assumptions
  • Breaking down multiple tasks into stages
  • Stating parameters
  • Pausing to think
  • Clarifying the question
  • Competency-based questions - what are they trying to get you to demonstrate?

Veterinary MMI Interviews

Do check the university/vet school website and forensically read any information they send you about the interview content, process and format. Also have a good Google search, as YouTube has a lot of information too.
