Labour Market Information (LMI)

Labour Market Information (LMI)

What Is It?

LMI is a comprehensive set of data that paints a picture of the current and future state of the labour market.

It helps to break down the complex world of work, from descriptions of different careers to their entry routes, promotion prospects, salaries, and the skills and qualifications needed. Crucially for young people, LMI also covers future demand: what kinds of jobs will be in demand after leaving school and what kinds of skills will be needed.

Unifrog has great LMI information for specific roles, available in the Careers tool.

What Does LMI Include?

LMI covers various aspects of the job market, such as:

  • Skills and qualifications: the specific skills, knowledge and qualifications required for different jobs.
  • Demand for jobs: the current and projected demand for specific occupations and industries.
  • Pay and conditions: information on salaries, benefits and working conditions for various jobs.
  • Employment trends: data on employment rates, unemployment rates and overall trends in the job market.
  • Growth sectors: industries and sectors that are growing and likely to offer job opportunities.

Why Is LMI Important?

LMI helps you make informed decisions about your career, including:

  • Choosing a career path: by understanding the demand for different jobs and the skills required, you can choose a path that fits your interests and skills.
  • Planning education and training: LMI can help you identify the education and training needed for your chosen career.
  • Making the most of your career: LMI can help you spot opportunities for advancement and growth within your field.

Why Is It Important to Young People?

"It is vital, in an environment where new industries are emerging and many of the most important jobs of the future don't yet exist, that individuals have access to high-quality labour market information and earnings data to underpin their choices."Anne Milton MP

Who Uses LMI?

  • Individuals: for career planning and job searching.
  • Employers: to understand the skills and qualifications of the workforce and plan for future staffing needs.
  • Educators and training providers: to tailor education and training programmes to the needs of the labour market.
  • Government and policymakers: to inform policy decisions on education, employment and workforce development.
